Surviving a Heart Attack ... and Medical Misogyny 
 

TLC personifies perseverance and grit.​​​​ Despite decades of exercise, yoga, and clean eating, TLC had a walking heart attack in 2017.
 

The Seattle-area ER doctor dismissed her symptoms of jaw pain and chest pain, and discharged her in 90 minutes.  "If the pain isn't radiating down the left arm, it isn't cardiac." A second heart event led to an emergency angiogram, which showed a congenital heart blockage. Despite half her heart lacking blood flow, the highly-recommended cardiologist insisted TLC's blockage was benign. In fact, he insisted that her chest pain was simply anxiety. "Probably just need an increase in your SSRI."

As she tumbled down the misdiagnosis rabbithole, TLC was saddened -- and infuriated -- to learn that cardiologists ignoring women's symptoms so routinely, it has a name: The Yentl Syndrome. Dr. Healy first coined the phrase in an academic paper written in 1991, where called for called for raising awareness of gender differences in healthcare.

Even though the Yentl Syndrome was identified thirty five years ago,  heart disease remains the #1 cause of death in women. In 2021, 310,000 women died due to heart disease vs. 286,000 women dying from cancer. ​

Who Said Careers Need to Be Linear? 
TLC's wildly varied career path is living proof that the irritation of roadblocks is what makes the pearl. ​​She took her English degree to New York City and began working at her dream job of executive media training. Unexpected unemployment landed her on Wall Street. She jumped on the dotcom frenzy and built a travel website. She happily ditched the website to host a financial talk show, the Dawn Patrol. ​
